DAY 124: RIGA

“Once upon a time, people were going on a boat. Then they walked to a tower. And then they went to a waterfall. And then I was driving in a pretend car and it was great. What city is this?”
– Marshall

Days 57-63: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay

Somebody’s dancing! They are on the Great Wall of China (Mum note: They are by Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi). The lady peddles the boat to make it move. I was just chilling. Then I was peddling because I wanted to. Then I saw a monkey on the Great Wall of China (Mum note: This was at Halong Bay). The sunset is good – yeah it is. Then I was riding on a baby seat on a bike with daddy. Then I was doing Big Lady statue! (Statue of Liberty) I am swimming in the water (Mum note: Sorry Marshall you did not swim here).

Day 32: Singapore

I cried when we got off the cruise ship in Singapore. – Marshall

Singapore Harbour

I am just tired. – Marshall

Singapore Arab Quarter

Once upon a time we were in Singapore and we saw things. Is this the Big Lady Statue (Statue of Liberty)? – Marshall

Singapore Arab Quarter

We only stayed a day in Singapore – it is a great place but we have been before and were keen to get up to Bangkok in time for Songkran. We stayed in the Arab quarter – a colourful, hip area with great food and quirky boutiques. Marshall was pretty upset to leave the cruise ship but he perked up when he realised how close Legoland was! – Mum

Happy Mother’s Day

My grandmother is 89 and she has Alzheimer’s. These pictures were taken four years ago – when she still had teeth, when she still fed herself, when she only looked confused or scared once in a while, when she still knew when she had to use the toilet, when she couldn’t really speak but you knew she understood, and when I think she still knew who I was. AlzheimersAlzheimers_2 Alzheimers_3Alzheimers_5Alzheimers_8Alzheimers_9

Grandma spent her whole life raising eight children and being attentive and loving to 30+ grandchildren and great grandchildren. Virtually every inch of her small, three-level Etobicoke home was covered in school photos, drawings and cards – fit for an episode of Extreme Hoarders.

Happy Mothers’ Day to you Grandma, and to all the lovely people who now take such good care of you. – Mum

Day 16: Goodbye Australia

Cruise leaving Fremantle

After driving 6313 glorious kilometres over 15 days, snaking our way through popular sights between Sydney and Perth, it was time to say a tough goodbye to Australia.

Next leg: two weeks at sea to Singapore. – Mum

Is that the cruise ship we went on with Alex? My favourite thing is the spaghetti and eating with Alex. I want to go back on that cruise ship with Alex. – Marshall

Day 13: Wave Rock

We drove more than 600km return to see Wave Rock, a 14-metre high granite rock that has been eroded into the shape of a giant wave. It was a very nice rock, but then that is all it was. A very nice rock. – Mum

Is the Great Wall of China? – Marshall
